Shameless 101 [10 Jul 2006|07:05pm]
For the first time in (mumble) months, since the housestuff went bonkers, I've finally gotten half a dozen pages of ficstuff written! I just can't post it in public yet 'cause it's for the August Shousetsu Bang*Bang issue. But it's in the pipeline anyway, honest.

So in the meantime here's me being shameless:

My birthday's Wednesday. Anybody feel like writing or drawing anything for me?

::bats eyelashes::

::goes back to scribbling, since the sooner the deadline-fic is done, the sooner I can carve out a slice of time for something I can post here::

O_____O;;; this was supposed to be a ficpost BUT... [03 Jul 2006|09:35am]
I was really going to write fic on the 4th of July 'cause it's a holiday and that means I shouldn't be working on work-work OR on house-work and the house is close enough to habitable that I could give myself one day's break time without too much guilt and July was going to be the month of getting my life back to normal and catching up with fanstuff I've missed over the past (counts) three months or so.

Except I just found out last night that I'm going to be spending most of July's weekends packing again. Not my stuff this time, but some friends of mine just sold their house and they don't have anywhere else to move at the end of the month except for into my house.

house stuff blathering )

I'd thought life was done throwing boxes at me for a while. Then Life looked at me with that little smirky thing and I said 'hoshit, I know that face, now what.'

I really was determined that the next post was going to be ficstuff. Best laid plans(TM). I'm sorry... kind of on overload mode still...

LONGEST WEEKEND EVER [30 May 2006|09:50am]
Feels like about 3 years since last week, not 3 days. Broke self on Saturday while moving furniture with about a dozen friends and family, thereby sticking them with schlepping my stuff, which was totally humiliating-making. I felt so bad about sitting there with my newly X-rayed-and-post-op-booted foot propped up while everybody moved stuff around me. Still on crutches, which makes getting into the basement a challenge and getting into the attic impossible.

The tub's hot water faucet is broken, one of the ceiling fans just died, I have another $700 of electricity upgrades to put into the place to make it legally insurable, I appear to be violently allergic to the animal excrement left in the ductwork by the previous owner's pets, the kitchen is about to explode and I haven't finished unpacking half the junk intended for it, my desk got broken in transit and it hurts to get myself folded onto the floor around the broken foot in order to try to screw enough L-brackets into the desk for it to stand up so I can get my computer onto it so I can start getting the office habitable... and THEN I seriously owe all the people who saved my hide this weekend a massive party as a thank-you!

Translation: It's going to be a while before I have ficspace left in my head around the RL must-be-dealt-with collection. Apologies in advance.

2 days left in my apartment [25 May 2006|10:06am]
then I move into this house I now have a hundred thousand dollar plus mortgage for, with several thousand dollars of upgrades needed, and about half of them to be done in the next week and I still seem to be allergic to it despite getting the carpets cleaned but the floors underneath were too much of a mess to try resurfacing in three days and auuuuuugh stress.

More info some time on the other side of the move.

Not dead yet, though it feels like it...

flyby note - CD Japan now offers Japanese magazine subscriptions [18 May 2006|09:03am]
For those of you who've been looking for an alternative to Asahiya and Sasuga, bit from their latest email:

"CDJapan now offers a wide variety of Japanese magazine subscriptions
for customers worldwide. Make sure to check it out! "

Haven't checked prices, still in insane house-move-craziness mode, but wanted to paste this here so I could actually find it again when I have a chance to get back into fanstuff some time hopefully next month...

Con report: the major fatality was my laptop ;_______; [07 May 2006|10:46pm]
My laptop is dead. Killed in the line of duty. Got knocked off a table by a staffer who'd already gone around that corner 15 times. This was the very first day I was at the con. ;_______; I had hysterics for a couple of hours. Then I got on with the rest of the keeping the con running. But talk about stuff I did NOT need on top of the house stress -- all the notes I'd taken about house planning stuff had been on there when it died, all the phone numbers to call, all the lists of stuff to do, the layout of what went where and the correspondence about the electricity and the pricing...

and I'd been meaning to do a full backup before I left, but thanks to the being locked out of the apartment the day before, when I got done packing it was 2 a.m. and I was already hallucinating from being so tired and I didn't want to stay up until 4 or 5 a.m. to run backups and now I'm so kicking myself...

I'm home, I'm dead, my laptop apparently magnetized all the bad karma for miles because the department I was helping run was as smooth as silk after that... unfortunately this has done a substantial setback on when I can get any more fics up for folks, because I have to try to recreate all the house data that I lost in addition to packing and moving and etc. and aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaauuuuuuuuuuuuuuugggggggggghhhhhhhhhh.

I had my hysterics on Thursday; now I'm just exhausted. I also don't know when I'm going to be able to get on LJ again, since at work in the middle of a bullpen of co-workers is right out of the question, and the computer I'm typing on right now is so old I really oughtn't have it on the network at all...

falling over now...

house stress compounded by con stress (leaving tomorrow at 8:30 a.m., just started thinking about packing an hour ago, that's what my life has been like).

Around the end of the month I'm going to be all moved into my new house and have more than 2 minutes at a time for scrambling through email -- will folks fill me in then on what's happened fanwise the past couple months that I've obviously missed? ^^;;;;

scuttling off to madly pack more... I need a "stressed!" icon over here too...

Probably AWOL for about a month [14 Apr 2006|02:17pm]
I bought a house today. Yeah, the same one I was stressing over. I'm closing in a month and moving in like 2 weeks at the end of May. I have no idea how much fictime I'll have (or flist reading for that matter) because I've never bought a house before and I've lived in this apartment for a decade and have a TON of stuff to sort and pitch and move and stuff.

It's not that I'm not interested! It's that I've just had one of those Legendary Inundations of Real Life (TM). Email me (check my profile for my Gmail address) if something needs attention paid urgently, though I may have skewed definitions of "urgently" for a while.

I may also be going up and down like a yo-yo. Please bear with me while I push my anti-anxiety antidepressants FAR, FAR beyond their intended purpose...

flyby update @_@ [04 Apr 2006|09:52am]
(looking around furtively but officemates are all out at the moment)

temporarily in a cube farm at work with 4 other people watching each other's screens, no cable at home, phone and power cutting in and out sporadically meaning modem access is questionable at best, road to home still blocked off, no idea how long that's going to last, but it's likely to be a while before I can get on even to check flist, let alone post... sorry! @_@

...well, THAT was interesting [03 Apr 2006|02:25am]
I'd been meaning to write & post some fic this evening, except for we kind of had a bunch of tornadoes. I don't think I was in the tornado's path but it's hard to be sure given that the winds we WERE getting were 75 MPH (120 km/h for the Europeans out there). I'd actually been in the middle of writing a reply to somebody when I heard the storm sirens go off.

Thirty seconds later I had no power and I barely grabbed time to shut down the computer before I jumped in the hall closet because I was hearing that classic freight-train-of-wind noise.

...well, I take that back. I shut down the computer, grabbed the nearest volume of manga and a flashlight, and jumped in the closet. I know about Illinois storms after having lived here all my life, and they usually take a while. So I reread Fullmetal Alchemist #1 while waiting to find out whether or not my apartment was going to be in one piece when I looked out again. My bathroom door was slamming itself open and shut because of the air pressure shifts -- and this is despite the fact that all my doors and windows were shut.

I've actually been inside the edge of a tornado in a car before. That was scarier. This was second on the scary scale because at least in the car I had the wild-eyed idea that I could, like, go somewhere, even if it's much safer in a building than a car. On the other hand, tornadoes don't usually come this close to substantial cities because of the shift in temperatures -- all that concrete & asphalt absorbing heat all day makes the temperature spike even well after dark, so they tend to take the low-pressure route along the outskirts. Unfortunately for me, I happen to be IN the outskirts. In this case, though, when the wind carrying them was going 75 MPH in a straight line, the concrete effect was pretty irrelevant in either case...

We've got trees and power poles-- not just lines, poles-- down in my neighborhood, and I have no idea where to go to find up to date information on where's going to be drivable tomorrow. I know they had all roads in and out of here blocked off for a big chunk of the six hours we had no power. (Which in itself prompted fic in my head... except writing by candlelight is a MASSIVE pain when your handwriting is horrible and the candles keep flickering because of the air pressure shifts. Actually swapped over to my new-to-me handheld. The irony in that was not lost: Yes, I am a computer addict.)

It's about 2:30 a.m. now and the power's back (yay!) But the normal net connection isn't, so I'm currently on dialup just because I need to find out if there's a non-power-cable-laden set of roads between me and work. Wish me luck finding that out; the local paper's website has nothing, off to try the various radio and TV station sites...

3 more of the 25 ficlets [27 Mar 2006|05:52pm]
24 of the 25 of 'em done (the Starlights one is just kicking my tail six ways from Sunday)... here's the last 3:

#23 - for Vaysh - Rufus and Tseng, silver and glass

#24 - for Mako - Kakashi, Iruka, goldfish, and/or age

#25 - for Kitty - Shika/Cho, butterfly molestation

comments over there please; I'm trying to have some chance of keeping threads coherent, though by now it's probably a pretty lost cause...

psst -- want a ficlet? [27 Mar 2006|04:54pm]
I am DETERMINED to learn to write SHORT, so I'm jumping on the meme bandwagon briefly. (sweatdrop) no guarantees on how quickly I'll write any of these, and what you get may be chibivision or other massively cracked out insanity, but...

The original rules - no more please, I've got 25 plus some by now! )

The first 21 )

The last 4 )

And the fic thread is breeding baby fics! )

And artstuff! )

I'm going to try hard to answer comments after I get all 25 of them written -- I've never had this many comments on a thread before and I keep looking at it and going EEEEEP OMG FLAILPANIC. I loooooove comments but I feel obsessively compelled to answer each and every last one at least once and that would turn this into like a 300 comment thread and OMG FLAILPANIC. Er. Must class prep. More fic soon, comments after, honest injun! (dash!) Almost almost done! Going to do the flying try-to-answer-stuff once I get these guys posted and linked and stuff...

ETA jr: auuuugh treading water, am going to try to get something replied at least to the requesters' comments and then go get foooooooooood...

That Geektastic Essay on Tentacles, Slime, and Eggs (Oh My) [25 Mar 2006|04:34pm]
(sweatdrop) I am a geek, a nerd, AND a technical writer. This makes for a dangerous combination.

'Cnidarian biological curiosities and the H. P. Lovecraft mythos as run through Final Fantasy VII by Ciceqi and expounded upon by yours truly,' which is so a title I never ever thought I'd find myself writing with anything resembling a straight face... )

So I think that's the end of the geekfest for the moment. Off to grab about half an hour for more actual fic before heading foodwards...

And people wonder why I'm cheesed off at the Naruto fandom [22 Mar 2006|10:29am]
Rant warning: I've had a migraine for two days and I'm so not in the mood for this shit. Full-on bitch mode go.

Three of the last four reviews have been either insulting or profane or both. )

In less steam-out-the-ears news, yes, I really DO have a rationale for the eggs and the tentacles and stuff, but I was gone for five days around last weekend and work is devouring my brain so I might post it next weekend (or whenever the headache decides to go away)... if I was organized I might be dangerous...

ETA: (mad glompage; it just took me about 12 reloads to get to my LJ home page at all, and I don't know if I can get this to update or not, let alone post replies reliably -- I'm hoping the Internet gods will be kind and let me get actual access again tomorrow so I can reply to folks and check flist...)

Never say never... (A Shoggoth on the Chimney pt. 1) [12 Mar 2006|11:35pm]

Totally Ciceqi and Dogmatix's fault. I disavow as much responsibility as I can manage while staring in horror at my fingertips and wondering where all that came from.

Shamelessly warping the title from the Cthulhu musical:

Title: A Shoggoth on the Chimney
Author: Oh my God I have to admit to this don't I...
Series: Final Fantasy VII, Cloud, Zack, Sephiroth, AND Aeris, because hey, when you're being over the top, let's really go for it...
Warnings: R-rated. Tentacles. Sephiroth failing to be as melodramatic as he desperately wanted to be. Tentacles. Aeris in an I-just-cleaned-that-you-slime-freak rage. Did I mention tentacles? Fluff. With tentacles. Yes, there are fluffy tentacles. Also, Cloud and his wheelbarrow. And some more tentacles.

Part one of the Creeping Horror that Ate My Brain. Finally occurred to me to post the second half first so things'll show up in the right order on the page, too... )

brief update on the Creeping Horror that Is Devouring My Brain [06 Mar 2006|11:26pm]
you know that never say never thing?

I swore I was never going to write tentacles, and it was going to take a lot of armtwisting to get me to read them.

Enter the twisting.

And now in my head there is TENTACLED CHIBICRACK happening.

Sephiroth keeps trying to turn into the Angsty Brooding Hero On A Clifftop Against the Cruel Lashing Storm(TM)... except it's a lot harder to be impressive-looking, even with that snappy black trenchcoat, when you're three feet shorter and dragging your hems behind you as you crawl around grouching.

Aeris is fascinated. Aeris is dangerous when fascinated.

And Zack? Zack just HAD to go and see exactly how literal he could make the phrase "barcrawling."

::headdesk headdesk headdesk::

Sample dialogue snippet from each of them )

...never say never, that's all I can say...

The artstuff pimping post (eventually) [21 Feb 2006|08:49pm]
This is going to be the artstuff pimping post when I have time to comb through all the links I've scattered all over everywhere to artstuff folks have drawn for me (thank you! ♥♥♥). I've got some of it linked in from the fic indexes, but the thirty-for-three index is getting really tricky to wade through with all the links here there and everywhere and the dual-sort and the, er, (sweatdrop) please take my word for it I'm a better technical writer than that page's organization makes it look!

Anyway, "Organize the Artstuff Pimping Post" is going on my do list along with "Finish the 25 Ficlets and Write Another for 30for3 Before Getting Booted" and "Yes Therapyfic I Know The Bunny Is There Now Give My Bloody Ankle Back I Need It For Walking On." I'm just about to go faceplant on the keyboard tonight and organization is not quite in the cards... muuuuust sleeeep...
