My personal theory goes that fandom comes out of a fundamental dissatisfaction with canon. Sometimes it's "that should NOT have happened to character X/Y/Z!" *cough*see-also-FF7*cough*, sometimes it's "hey that's a plot hole that needs patching," and sometimes it's just "hey there's not enough of that story and we want to see more!" And sometimes, like the recipes, it's a case of "I love the characters, I love cooking, and let's see what I can come up with." :3
Still, I think fandom is still pretty profoundly rooted in "there's something I want to see/create/experience that canon didn't do." (Which is one of the reasons I get my hackles up when someone tells me that I 'ought to write more in line with canon' or 'ought to enjoy following canon more than I do' - nobody gets to tell me what I ought to enjoy, and FF7 in particular is a fandom where I'm all about ";___; they did nasty stuff to nice people and I wanna fixit!" so my fanworks are a pretty deliberate nose-thumbing in the direction of the "Sephiroth was an irredeemable bastard and you should only write him as a deliberately psychotic mass murderer rather than finding sympathetic backstory angles" crowd. ^^;;;; But that's a different rant. XD)
also, I hope the Wers' Sephiroth doesn't take offense at my Sackiroth plushies? I freely admit Sackiroth is above and beyond my usual scope of canon-warpage, just because pegging the needle on "cute AND wrong at the same time" calls out to my mischief-streak. But he's so cute! And so wrong! And so is the idea of Jenova's head dripping yarn guts and getting dragged around by my cat like an overgrown chewtoy and, er, different rant again. XDD
Meat on skewers and lots of fish, hmm? Sounds tasty to me! Fish in particular makes me purr. (I'd be plenty happy to live on vegetables and sushi for the rest of my life. Nomnomnom.) What kind of flavor blends went with the skewers and the stews and stuff? (Where'd your family put the needle on the balance points between sweet/hot/tangy/savory/fragrant?)
:wibble: and I hope chocobos weren't on the eating-menu? Yeah, they're about the size of ostriches, yeah they'd have a lot of meat, butbutbut :wibble: I hate the thought of eating ostriches too. Those flirty eyelashes and all the fluffy tails and... ^^;;; I'm such a sap, sorry!
