When it rains... I woke up at 5:30 to the sound of lightning and thunder, so I shut all my windows.
When I shut my windows, I could hear water pouring. Indoors.
I went down the basement. There was water coming in through the window above the washing machine at a rate of 5 gallons every 90 seconds. (I know this because that's how long it took before I had to dump the bucket.)
I went outside, got soaked in less than 3 seconds, tried to divert the bolted-in-place downspout to some other direction, failed, went and got the recycling bin, diverted it into that, and went back down just in time to discover that there was noticeably more water in the well than there had been when I'd started.
So I bailed until the urgent downpour was over, and then went up to call the insurance company.
When I got done with the insurance company and headed back down to start carrying things into another room, I heard water pouring again. But this time it wasn't coming from the window.
This time, the sewer line was backing up through my basement shower.
I now have half an inch two inches of raw sewage standing in most of the rooms of my basement.
